Scripture in the Morning #154
Phyl and I were recently on a biking vacation in northern Idaho and there I got the chance to read a John Owen book entitled “Communion with God” – written in 1656. So, I thought I would share some messages derived from Owen’s book.
Now, there is great value in reading what God’s people – in this case, John Owen – have to say about the truths of Scriptures. That is why we study the Bible together, that is why we attend sermons and the like – to see what another set of eyes on the Scripture sees. We take what they write and evaluate what they say in view of the Word and a great deal can be learned of our Lord that way. In the case of Owen (1610-1683), many here, including me, would take issue with a reasonable subset of what Owen believes. That said, he raises some wonderful questions and has some truly remarkable insights that are Biblical. Like all authors, we measure against the Word and take in the Biblical and dismiss that which is not Biblical.
Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
For today may we pray that the Lord give us reverence for His Word, a passion for learning from His Word – both directly and through others – and may He protect us from error.
Have a wonderful day.
