1 Thessalonians 1:1-1:7

1 Thessalonians 1:1 – 1:7

– Thessalonica is today called Thessaloniki. It was conquered by Rome in 168 BC & existed in
Paul’s day as a Roman protectorate (governed independently but with oversight by Rome). In
Paul’s time had a population of 200,000 (mostly Greek, with a large Roman population & a
strong Jewish minority)
– The Church at Thessolonica: Paul, Silas, Timothy and Luke Founded the Church during the 2nd
Missionary Journey – in 50/51 AD (Acts 17:1–10). They were then forced to leave Thessalonica
after a few short months… they then went to Athens & then to Corinth
– A few months later, Paul sent Timothy back to check on the state of the Thessalonians’ Faith.
Timothy soon returned with a good report, prompting Paul to write 1 Thessalonians. Paul  wrote
this letter from Corinth in late 51 AD…
– The Content of the Letter:
– centers on instruction on how to live in these last days as the Bride of Christ…
– More than any Other Book in the Bible, 1 Thessalonians Teaches that our Spiritual
Growth is very Connected to the Hope that arises in us as we Think about the 2nd
Coming of Christ
– 1 Thessalonians also teaches that the Christian must Love Three Things more than all
else:
God; God's Word; God's People

1 Thes 1:1-3 Paul, Silvanus (Greek: Silas), and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians in
God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace. 2 We give
thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, 3
remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and
steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
– Why Thank God for the Peoples’ Faith & Obedience?
Phil 2:13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
– For Your Consideration
– When our loved Ones are Walking Well with the Lord, we Should Thank and Praise God
for His Grace at Work in Them…
– All Credit is onto Our God of Grace, not the Vessel through Whom God Works
1 Thes 1:4,5a For we know, brothers loved by God, that He has chosen you 5 because our
gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and
with full conviction…

– For Your Consideration
– We can “Know” that another Person is of the Bride of Christ if they Embrace Biblical
truth because only those Saved have the Spirit in them Illumining Truth…
1 Cor 2:13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the

Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.

Romans 10:9 if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that

God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

1 Thes 1:5b,6 … You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. 6 And
you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the Word in much
affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit…

– For Your Consideration
– God in Us is greater than our Circumstances…
– We can have “Joy” in the Spirit even when under Affliction…
1 Thes 1:7 … so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in

Achaia.
– For Your Consideration
– the Quality of Our Walk with the Lord Affects more than Just Us…
– those around us will likely imitate us…
– 5 Applied Questions
– Are we the same all week as we are on Sundays?
– Is the Centrality of our Relationship with the Lord Uniformly seen by our Family and
Loved Ones in a Consistent Manner?
– When times are tough, do those around us see us run to the Lord or to self and the World?
– Is our Love for the Lord, His Word and His People such that those watching us daily see
His Hand in what we do?
– Do those around us truly see the Joy of the Lord in us?
If any of the answers to these questions are not like we would want – then that was
then and this is now… every day is a new day in Christ, a new day for His grace to move us more fully to

where we should be…

Lam 3:22-23 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end;

23 they are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness.
The Lord, by Grace, can accomplish in us today & tomorrow what we
failed to do in the past… His Grace is new every morning

The Takeaway
– We should Thank the Lord for all the Obedience and Joy that we see in our Loved Ones
who Know Him

– We should recognize that all the Good we see in others is God’s Grace at Work in Them
– We should see that all the Good in us is God’s Grace at Work in Us
– We can “know” if another person is the Bride of Christ by what they Embrace as True
– If a Loved One is Saved, We should recognize that this is God’s Grace at Work in Them

and Thank and Praise God for Saving them…
– We should recognize that Our Walk with the Lord Affects not just us – but our Loved
Ones as Well

Hebrews 13:20–21

Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the
sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do His will,
working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and
ever. Amen.
