Hosea1:1-1:11

Hosea 1:1 – 1:11

– Who was Hosea?
– Nothing is known about his background other than he wrote in about 730 BC…
– he was a contemporary of Isaiah, Micah and Amos
– Hosea was a prophet to the Northern Kingdom of Israel…
– Haggai, Joel and Malachi were prophets to the Southern Kingdom of Judah
– Hosea was 250+ years before Haggai, Joel and Malachi
– The Book of Hosea is in two Sections. Chapters 1&2 are about God giving the order to Hosea to
Marry an Unfaithful Prostitute & using what Results from this to Teach about the question of
“Who are God’s People?” Chapters 3-14 are about Messages of Judgment and Mercy
– Hosea began his ministry when things were politically successful and economically prosperous &
the people didn’t depend on the Lord – idolatry, spiritual failure, and moral corruption was
rampant
– A Consistent Picture Plays Out in Hosea and in the Entire OT. in this picture, God is the Husband
of Ethnic Israel who is the Bride. Ethnic Israel’s chronic attraction for idols was like the lust of an
adulterer – Ethnic Israel was as unfaithful as a prostitute
Hosea 1:1,2 The word of the Lord that came to Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah,
Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son
of Joash, king of Israel. 2 When the Lord first spoke through Hosea,
the Lord said to Hosea, “Go, take to yourself a wife of whoredom and
have children of whoredom, for the land commits great whoredom by forsaking
the Lord.”

– Why was Hosea commanded to take a prostitute for a wife?
– With this command God put Hosea in the place where Hosea felt what God feels when
Ethnic Israel is Unfaithful towards Him
Hosea 1:3-5 So he went and took Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and
bore him a son. 4 And the Lord said to him, “Call his name Jezreel, for in just a
little while I will punish the house of Jehu for the blood of Jezreel, and I will put
an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel. 5 And on that day I will break the
bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel.”

– Jezreel means “Scattered” and Israel would soon be scattered by the Assyrian army (in 722 BC).
Just as the house of Jehu fell, so would the whole kingdom of Israel. Before the prophetic
ministry of Hosea was finished, Israel was destroyed by the Assyrian Empire (2 Kings 17:20-
23)…
Hosea 1:6,7 She conceived again and bore a daughter. And the Lord said to him, “Call her
name Lo-Ruhamah (No Mercy), for I will no more have mercy on the house of
Israel, to forgive them at all. 7 But I will have mercy on the house of Judah, and I
will save them by the Lord their God. I will not save them by bow or by sword or
by war or by horses or by horsemen.”

– The army of Assyria that destroyed Israel also attacked Judah, but they did not conquer them.
Instead, God miraculously fought on behalf of Judah against Assyria when the angel of
the LORD killed 185,000 soldiers in the camp of Assyria in one night (2 Kings 19:35)
Hosea 1:8,9 When she had weaned No Mercy, she conceived and bore a son. 9 And
the Lord said, “Call his name Lo-Ammi (Not My People), for you are not my
people, and I am not your God.
– Ethnic Israel was Never God’s People onto Salvation…
– They were God’s people as a nation in that the Law, the Prophets, OT history and the
messiah were all to come through them
– But they were never God’s people onto Salvation…
Hosea 1:10,11  Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be like the sand of the sea, which
cannot be measured or numbered. And in the place where it was said to
them, “You are not my people,” it shall be said to them, “Children of the living
God.” 11 And the children of Judah and the children of Israel shall be gathered
together, and there shall be appointed for them one head. And they shall go up
from the land, for great shall be the day of Jezreel.

– The One Head is Christ
– and the Future Event in View – the “Great Day of Jezreel” is the Cross…
– at the Cross Grace & Mercy is given to the “Bride of Christ”
Rom 9:24-26 We (the Elect; the Bride of Christ) are vessels of mercy whom He has called, not
from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? 25 As indeed He says in Hosea,
“Those who were not my people I will call ‘my people,’ and her who was not
beloved I will call ‘beloved.’” 26 “And in the very place where it was said to
them, ‘You are not my people,’ there they will be called ‘sons of the living
God.’”

1 Peter 2:10 Once you [the Bride of Christ] were not a people, but now you are God's people;

once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Take Home Message
– God’s Relationship with His people is like a Marriage – Ethnic Israel, as a nation had
forsaken God – they were unfaithful – like a prostitute
– God has Hosea Marry a Prostitute so that we can relate to the insult and dishonor God
experiences in being “married” to an unfaithful bride
– God says of Ethnic Israel “you are not My people and I am not your God”
– Ethnic Israel is thus worthy of Immediate Judgment…
– Israel was Judged & defeated by the Assyrians 8-10 years after Hosea made the
prediction
– Judah was spared as an example of God’s Mercy
– And in the place where it was said to them, “You are not my people,” it shall be said to
them, “Children of the living God”
– Both 1 Peter 2:10 and Romans 9:25-26 tell us that while ethnic Israel is not God’s
people…
Spiritual Israel – the Bride of Christ – are God’s People…by Grace Alone
The Practical Side…
– we should take heed of what it is like to be married to an unfaithful spouse…

– and we should not want to be that unfaithful Bride…
– we are numbered among the “Bride of Christ” and should seek Grace to be faithful onto
our Bridegroom
